Chapter 13

If MacArthur Only Had Ears, or Videoke Terrorism

September 27, 2003

Dear Judy, John, Charlie, and Bob,

What a great time we had on Corregidor! I just want to say that my only regret was that the trip was too short. Isn’t that always the case? Thanks to Bob’s daughter Vicky, Marcia and I continued on to Bataan and then saw Cabanatuan and more of Manila. We are planning to go back and spend a couple of weeks on Corregidor on our own, tentatively in February 2005. We understand that the weather then is unbeatable.

I was stunned by something that occurred upon our return. We visited my mother in June, and I asked to see the photo album that she had put together from their Valor Tour trip in 1980. I wanted to see what the island looked like almost twenty-five years ago. To my shock, the pictures of Dad posing by “his” mortar in Battery Way were not by Mortar No. 2, as I had been led to expect, but by Mortar No. 1! I therefore have to believe that we posed for all of our pictures, both last year and this, by the wrong mortar, the one in the back right, instead of the one in the front right. The good news is it gives us an excuse to go back.

Like I said, we enjoyed ourselves so much, and each of you made the trip that much more special. I’m sending you a short story that I wrote based on some experiences we had on Corregidor. The manager of the www.corregidor.org website liked it so much that he is posting it on his “Then and Now” section. I’m also enclosing the group picture we took at sunset at Battery Grubbs, and of the MacArthur statue at the North Dock area.

Judy, it was such a surprise and pleasure to meet your sister Kathy and you last year, and a joy to have you with us on this intimate tour. What a group of characters we had. I hope this article helps you remember one of our fun times. Keep in touch, and maybe we can do it again sometime.

John, I just want to say that it’s been a pleasure and so much fun being on two tours with you. I hope you get a kick out of the story. I’d love to have your phone number so we can talk once in a while.

Charlie, you’re quite a character, and I hope you enjoy the story as well. I poked a little good-natured fun at you, and I hope you don’t mind. Maybe someday we’ll cross paths again.

Bob, what a great joy it has been to know you. I’ll get that manuscript to you someday. Your comments and the discovery of Dad’s picture have made me rethink how I want to go about writing the book. I also felt sadness upon returning home that could only be described as Post-Corregidor Syndrome. Anytime you feel like taking a break from traveling, I’ll be
